Blenkinsop John, Eigentümer der Kohlengruben in Middleton bei Leeds, hat zuerst Lokomotiven zur Beförderung von Lasten verwendet. Der Erbauer der auf seine Anregung hergestellten Lokomotiven war Mathew Murray, Ingenieur in Leeds. Beide zweifelten an der Möglichkeit, mit glatten Rädern auf Schienen genügende Reibung zur Fortbewegung von Lasten zu erzielen. Sie statteten daher ihre Lokomotiven mit einem Zahnrade aus, in das an der Außenseite einer der Schienen eingesetzte Zapfen – Zahnstange – eingriffen. B. und Murray sind daher die Schöpfer der Zahnradlokomotiven und Zahnradbahnen. Von derartigen Lokomotiven waren einige seit 1812 viele Jahre zwischen Middleton und den Werften bei Great Wilson und Kidacre Street in Leeds in Verwendung (s. Lokomotive).
