Great Northern of Ireland, die zweitgrößte Eisenbahn Irlands, mit dem Sitz der Gesellschaft in Dublin (561 engl. M. = 903 km). Sie beherrscht einen Teil des östlichen und das nördliche Irland und stellt die Verbindung zwischen den Städten Dublin, Dundalk, Belfast, und Londonderry her. Die Hauptlinie geht von Dublin über Drogheda nach Dundalk, von wo sie nördlich über Newry, Portadown, Lisburn nach Belfast, und nordwestlich über Castleblayney, Clones, Enniskillen, Omagh und Strabanenach Londonderry läuft. Innerhalb dieser Gabel liegen die Verbindungslinien Portadown-Armagh-Clones mit der Verlängerung nach Cavan und Portadown-Dungannon nach Omagh.

Die G. ist aus der Fusion der Hauptbahnen Dublin and Drogheda, Dublin and Belfast Junction, Irish North Western, Ulster und anderen kleineren Bahnen entstanden und auf Grund der Parlamentsakte vom 28. Juni 1877 konstituiert.

Das aufgewendete Kapital betrug Ende 1912 rund 9 Mill. (183∙6 Mill. M.).

Die Betriebseinnahmen stellten sich im Jahre 1912 auf 1–1 Mill. (22∙4 Mill. M.), wovon auf den Personen-, Gepäck-, Parcelsverkehr 0∙56 Mill. (11∙4 Mill. M.), auf den Güterverkehr 0∙52 Mill. (10∙6 Mill. M.) entfallen. Den Einnahmen standen Betriebsausgaben in der Höhe von 0∙68 Mill. Mill. (13∙9 Mill. M.) gegenüber. Der Betriebskoeffizient belief sich auf 62%.
